If you are up for a hike on your first day then the Trælanípan hike, also known as the slave cliff –is a favourite among travellers. It is an easy hike for children and adults alike and takes around 2-3 hours in total. You will walk along lake Sørvágsvatn, which is also known as the lake above the ocean. Before you reach the peak, you will have a great view of the cliff itself and on the hike, you will also be able to see the Trøllkonufingur and Bøsdalafossur waterfall.
Hiking fee DKK 200,- per person which can be paid on spot.
Today you can experience Gásadalur on foot by hiking the ‘old postman’s trail’. Gásadalur was once one of the most isolated villages in the Faroe Islands. The ‘old postman’s trail’ was used by the people of Gásadalur until the village was connected to the rest of the island by a tunnel in 2004. To start the beautiful and historical hike, you will drive to the valley west of the village Bøur where the trail between Bøur and Gásadalur starts. The hike can be difficult in some places and takes around 3-4 hours in total.
On this day you can explore the charming villages Saksun and Tjørnuvík. Saksun is known for its magical seawater lagoon and beautiful old church. Tjørnuvík has a black sandy beach surrounded by high mountains and a stunning view of Risin & Kellingin, also known as the Giant and the Hag. Legend has it that they tried to drag the Faroe Islands to Iceland.
Your hike starts in Saksun below the old farmhouseDúvugarður, where you will follow a wonderful path between perhaps two of the most stunning villages in the Faroe Islands. The path will also have a great view of Risin & Kellingin. The hike takes around 2 hours one way.
After your hike you can drive to Klaksvík or Runavík, where you will spend the next two nights.
Today you can hike from Leirvík to Norðragøta. From the top you will have an excellent view of the surrounding villages. If you are lucky and the weather allows it, you can use the binoculars – that has been placed on the top – to get a glimpse of the Northern islands. The path starts just above the football field in Leirvík and used to be one of the main routes between the Northern Islands and the rest of the Faroe Islands. The way down from the top might look steep but the path is easy to see and good to walk. The hike will take 3-4 hours in total.
Today you will leave the hotel early, drive to Tórshavn and catch the ferry to Nólsoy. Upon arrival in Nólsoy you will see the colorful houses and the white wooden church out by the pier. You will also see a small beach popular with the locals. You can choose to take a stroll in the village and maybe visit the small café or if you are up for it, you can hike to Borðan Lighthouse, which is one of the world’s most robust lighthouses build in 1893. On your way to the lighthouse, you will pass a site, where people used to hide from pirates and if you walk a little further nearing the top you can enjoy the beautiful view. The hike to the lighthouse will take around 5-6 hours in total. Nólsoy is also known for its wild birdlife and if you are lucky, you might spot some puffins before going back to Tórshavn.
Your last two nights you will spend in Tórshavn.
This is your last full day to explore. After waking up, you can eat breakfast, while enjoying the view of Nólsoy before going on a hike from Tórshavn to Kirkjubøur. The path starts in Tórshavn and on your way up hill remember to turn around to take in the view. Along the path you will pass a podium built of rocks, where folk meetings were held from the 19th century up to the 1960s. You will also be able to see the islands of Hestur and Koltur. Upon arriving in the charming Kirkjubøur you will see Saint Olav’s Church, the oldest still used church from the 12th century, and the ruins of the Magnus Cathedral from around 1300. The hike will take around 2-3 hours in total, but you can also catch the bus back to Tórshavn from Kirkjubøur.
If you have time, you can use the rest of the day to explore Tórshavn, the smallest capital in the world. Take a walk through the city and visit the old part of town. You can also visit the craft and wool shops along with a cozy café. If you like artifacts, you can visit several museums in the city.
Your self exploring experience has come to an end and you will be heading back home. Before leaving you will be returning your rental car at Vágar airport. We hope that this experience has filled you with memories of charming villages and amazing nature.
